Dr. Sir Muhammad Iqbal, the poet philosopher, conceived the
idea of a separate home-land for the Muslims of South Asia:
Pakistan. In befitting acknowledgement of his work, in the south-western
corner of Hazuri Bagh, near the steps of Badshahi Mosque, he
was interred on 21st April 1938. The chief architect of the
Deccan State of Hyderbad, Nawab Zain Yar Jang was commissioned
to prepare a design for the mausoleum. Inspired by Afghan architectural
style with controlled Moorish elements, the tomb was started
in 1946 and completed by 1953/1954. The red sand-stone from
Jaipur and red marble from Makrana blend harmonious in this
confidently executed modern funerary structure. Funds were raised
through contribution by the poet's admirers. |

| During
the Sikh regime the mosque was used as a magazine for military
store and later for other martial purposes. Some years after
the annexation of the Punjab by the British, the mosque in dilapidated
but still majestic ruin was restored to the Muslims in 1856.
Here, it is conceived- three glorious marble domes, four minarets
and all-in the flat traditional style. |
